Lebanese nationalism has historically been exclusionary – as are all nationalisms – and isolationist, in that it accentuates differences between the Lebanese and other Levantines or other Arabs while downplaying shared attributes and characteristics.

Nine Lebanese civil society organizations have released a statement condemning the expulsion of children of migrant workers born in Lebanon.
The following is the press release by 9 Civil Society Organizations on the General Security’s decision not to renew residency permits for children of Migrant Workers.
I know that every single person who might read this has a mother or maybe unfortunately has lost her already. I’m certain certain that many of you can relate to the pain caused by witnessing a loved one suffer & wither away.
Since early this summer, the General Security had decided, without explanation or prior warning, with no new decision or decree, to no longer renew the residency permits of many migrant domestic workers who reside in Lebanon with their children, most of which have been born and raised here all their lives.
One migrant domestic worker in Lebanon decided to fight the “kafala” system and escape her employers.
Today a #starbucks employee kicked a lil 9yr old Syrian refugee girl in the back cz she was trying to sell customers chocolate bars! #Beirut
