Each time we get a chance to visit a prison we get “re-surprised” by the number of migrant workers unrecognized and unnoticed neither by their embassies nor by their families. When we leave, our trip back to our homes and offices is filled by a great amount of guilt and unrest. The stories that could be told are not few. Hundreds of detained migrant workers but no one asks about them. Their families and loved ones might not even know they are there.

Workers spending years in prisons unjustly just because they chose to “run away” from their employer. Migrant workers spending years in prison without the assistance of a lawyer, without any embassy pushing and lobbying for their release and without any possibility of a visit from their families. Migrant workers are being treated like criminals and even if they were, the treatment is based on segregation and racism and lacks any respect for their rights as human beings. We all know how bad the situation in the Lebanese prisons is but what we don’t know is that cold and hunger is mostly what migrant workers in prisons suffer from. A lack of money makes it very hard for them to buy food, shampoo or even hygienic pads and whatever NGOs and other organizations provide is not close to enough. To sum up migrant workers are suffering and they need our help. Donate anything from food, clothes (in good shape of course) to hygienic products and we will work with migrant community leaders to make sure that migrant workers in prison receive those donations. Our estimations show that there are around 150 prisoner in the Qubbe prison in the North. Numbers about other prisons do not exist because these prisons are till now unaccessible.
